Three still run. The Truckee’s Boca-to-Floriston run departs twice daily, the South Fork American works off daily releases into Chili Bar Reservoir, and the Middle Fork’s Tunnel Chute keeps running on scheduled water out of the high country.
The other two are finished for the year. The North Fork American is free-flowing, so its Class IV+ season lives and dies with spring snowmelt, and the East Fork Carson’s Hangman’s Run only operates April through May or June. Two down.

The Boca-Floriston run is the closest whitewater to Lake Tahoe
Seven river miles, about three and a half hours, launching minutes outside Truckee. It starts easy on purpose.
Boulder gardens and swimming holes come first, then the river tightens into the Floriston Gorge for Ke-Bob, Jaws, and Pinball — Class III+ water that lands at the end of the trip rather than the beginning. Adults 13 and up are $128.40; kids 7 to 12 are $107.

Less water doesn’t mean a boring river. It means a technical one. Rocks that were washed out in June now stand up, lines get narrower, and a good guide earns their keep reading a route that shifts week to week. The South Fork is the exception to autumn’s fade: its water comes out of the Upper American River Project reservoirs — Union Valley, Loon Lake, Ice House, and Slab Creek — which release into Chili Bar Reservoir daily.
Late-season flows also mean more swim stops and more float time between rapids, which is exactly what most families want out of an early-fall day. Nobody’s teeth chatter in September.

Booking an early-fall trip out of Truckee
September fills on weekends and stays wide open midweek. Truckee departures run at 8:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., so a Tuesday morning is usually easier to get than a Saturday afternoon, and midweek boats tend to be less crowded.
Book early anyway. If you want the Middle Fork instead, plan a long day — seven-plus hours, ages 13 and up, from $187.25, meeting in the back lot behind Raley’s at 13384 Lincoln Way in Auburn, just off I-80 at the Foresthill exit.
