-
Our History on the Truckee River Our story on the Truckee River began In the 1980s and 1990s; back then, the Truckee River was not considered a place for paddle sports recreation. At the time, government ordinances were in place to prohibit whitewater rafting. In 1997, Tahoe Whitewater Tours owner, Mike Miltner, fell in love with the Truckee River and began a long quest to allow it to be used, giving river runners the freedom to experience this beautiful river. Thanks to his efforts, he and his company, Tahoe Whitewater Tours, has shown guests all the fantastic elements the Truckee River has to offer with over 30 years of river rafting history.

The Source of the Truckee River: Where Our Water Comes From
-
The Boca-Floriston run on the Truckee River is one of the most reliable stretches of whitewater in the Sierra. While other operations closer to Tahoe City rely solely on the gates at Lake Tahoe, our section of the river is fed by a sophisticated network of five different water storage resources. This diversified “water portfolio” ensures that we have consistent, high-energy flows for rafting all summer long, even when the upper “float” sections of the river have run dry. Our Five Primary Water Sources Because we are located further downstream, we benefit from the combined releases of: Why This Matters for Your Trip
-
Lake Tahoe: The primary source, providing clear, crisp alpine water.
-
Donner Lake: Adds additional flow from the historic Donner Pass drainage.
-
Prosser Reservoir: A key contributor to maintaining steady river levels.
-
Stampede Reservoir: One of the largest storage areas in the system.
-
Boca Reservoir: The final source located just above our launch point, ensuring optimal flows for the Floriston Gorge.
-
-
-
May, June, July, August, September
-
The Boca-Floriston section of the Truckee River is located roughly 30 miles downstream from its source, flowing out of Lake Tahoe. There is ample water flowing in this section due to multiple creeks and reservoirs flowing into the river, allowing us to run throughout every summer. We operate two trips a day beginning our season in early May, and we usually raft until mid-September.
-
During May and September we may operate 1 tour a day
-
During June, July, August we operate a morning and afternoon tour.

WHAT TO WEAR
-
Getting ready for a whitewater rafting trip is just like preparing for a day at the beach. Since everything on the raft will get wet, dress in clothing that makes you comfortable swimming.
The Quick List:
-
Secure Footwear (REQUIRED): Flip-flops, Crocs, or bare feet are not allowed. You must wear shoes that strap or tie securely to your feet (strap-on sandals, water shoes, booties, or old tennis shoes). This ensures you can safely navigate the shoreline if you hop out for a swim.
-
Swimwear: A bathing suit or quick-drying athletic shorts.
-
Sun Protection: A sun shirt (rash guard) or light synthetic layer, a baseball hat, and sunscreen.
-
Sunglasses: Highly recommended, but please use a retention strap if they are expensive!
-
Water Bottle: A reusable bottle with a hard loop that can be clipped or tied securely to the raft.Getting ready for a whitewater rafting trip is just like preparing for a day at the beach. Since everything on the raft will get wet, dress in clothing that makes you comfortable swimming.
⚠️ Things to Leave at Home: Everything on the river gets wet and can easily fall out of pockets. Please leave cellphones, wallets, car keys, and valuables at home or locked in your vehicle. We provide a secure key-check at our office.

At no extra cost, we provide every guest with professional-grade equipment:
-
High-Float PFDs (Life Jackets)

Instant Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation email immediately. This contains your digital waiver links, your specific meeting time, and a GPS-ready map link to our Truckee River Base.
-
Digital Waivers: Every participant (or a legal guardian for minors) must sign our digital waiver before arrival. Completing this ahead of time speeds up your check-in process and gets you to the water faster!
-
Final Details: A few days before your trip, keep an eye out for additional emails to help you prepare. These will include a link to our Essential Whitewater Safety Talk, which covers everything you need to know before hitting the river.

On the Water
-
Minimum Age
-
Minimum Age: 7 Years Old The Truckee River features technical boulder gardens and the high-energy Floriston Gorge. For safety, we require all children to be at least seven years old. While this is a family-friendly run, “unintentional swimming” is a possibility. It is vital that all participants are old enough to listen to, understand, and follow the immediate instructions given by our professional river guides.
-
Active Participation: Adventurous Beginners We categorize this trip as an “Adventurous Beginner” run. Unlike a passive float, this river requires active participation. You are a member of the paddle team! You will be expected to follow your guide’s commands—paddling forward, backward, or “digging in”—to help navigate technical rapids like Jaws and Pinball.
Physical Requirements
-
Weight Limit: 250 lbs For the safety of our guests and the buoyancy of our rafts, we maintain a maximum weight limit of 250 lbs. This is especially important on the Truckee, where lower water levels later in the summer require the boats to sit “high and light” to navigate through tight boulder gardens without getting stuck.
-
Swimming Ability Knowing how to swim is not a requirement for our Class II-III+ tours, as every guest is fitted with a professional, high-float PFD (Life Jacket). However, you should be comfortable in moving water. Because the Truckee features some technical stretches, staying calm and following your guide’s instructions is the most important skill you can bring to the river.
No Experience Necessary
This run is specifically designed to be “progressive,” meaning the river starts out gentle and gives you plenty of time to learn the ropes before we hit the first rapids. Whether it’s your first time in a raft or your fiftieth, we’ll provide all the instruction you need to navigate like a seasoned crew.
-
On this section of the river:
-
Active participation is essential.
-
Everyone should be in good physical shape.
-
No Experience is necessary.
-
-
Raft Size & Capacity: Truckee River
On the Truckee River, we utilize 13’ professional-grade, self-bailing rafts. These boats are specifically selected for their agility in the tight boulder gardens and technical channels of the Boca-Floriston run.
-
Paddling Teams: Our rafts accommodate up to 6 guests plus a guide. Because river flows fluctuate, we prioritize boat responsiveness and may not always fill every seat to keep the craft nimble.
-
Season Adaptability: In July and August, the river becomes more technical. We may limit capacity to 4 adults plus a guide to ensure the boat stays light through the tighter sections and Floriston Gorge.
-
Families & Kids: If your group is a mix of adults and children, we can often maintain a capacity of 6. Please call our office with any specific questions regarding your group’s layout.
-
Large Groups: Parties larger than 4- 6 may be split into multiple rafts. This ensures balanced boats. Don’t worry though the guides make sure to keep your group floating together during the trip.
Guest Involvement on the Truckee River
Every Truckee River tour is led by an expert guide who teaches, instructs and captains the raft from the back, but the “engine” and paddling team is where you come in to help get the boat where it needs to go.
-
Guided Coaching: Before we hit the first rapid, your guide will teach you the fundamentals: how to sit securely, hold your paddle correctly, and execute effective strokes.
-
Active Participation: As we enter turbulent sections, your guide will call out commands like “Forward Two!” or “Back Paddle!” Your responsibility is to listen closely and work as a team to move the raft smoothly through the waves.
-
The Recipe for Success: Teamwork, sharp listening, and strong paddling are what turn a good trip into a legendary one.
-
Guide Appreciation: Our guides are dedicated to providing a safe, world-class experience. If your guide made your day on the Truckee unforgettable, tipping is a standard and much-appreciated way to show your thanks at the end of the journey.

Photos & Professional Photography
Capture the thrill without the risk! We want you to be fully present for the adrenaline of the South Fork American, so we’ve made it easy to get world-class shots of your adventure without risking your own gear.
Keep Your Tech Safe (and Your Hands Free!)
We strongly discourage bringing cell phones or personal cameras on the rafts. Everything that goes on the river has a high chance of being lost, broken, or “gone forever” in the current.
-
Safety First: Your guides need your full attention and active paddling to navigate Class III rapids safely. Holding a phone is a distraction that can compromise the team’s stability.
-
Entrapment Hazards: For your safety, lanyards, neck straps, and bulky phone cases are strictly prohibited on the boats. These can become serious snag or entrapment hazards in moving water.
GoPros & Adventure Cameras
If you want to capture your own “POV” footage, GoPros and similar adventure devices are more than welcome!
-
Mounting: Please be aware that you may need to provide your own adhesive mount, as our helmets do not come with pre-installed attachments.
-
Questions? If you have specific questions about mounting your camera or bringing adventure gear, please give our office a call before your trip.
Professional Action Shots by Hot Shot Imaging
Don’t worry about missing the perfect shot—professional photographers are stationed at the river’s most iconic “splash zones.” You’ll find them at:
-
Troublemaker (The Upper Run’s most famous drop)
-
Satan’s Cesspool (Big waves in the Gorge)
-
Hospital Bar (The grand finale)
Your high-resolution action photos are typically available for viewing and purchase the same day as your trip. You can find your photos and relive the highlights at HotShotImaging.com.
