Our History & Heritage While our roots are famously tied to pioneering the Truckee River, the same spirit of advocacy and passion drives our operations on the South Fork American. Since 1994, Tahoe Whitewater Tours has been family-owned and operated, growing from a small group of energetic river lovers into a premier outfitter. We’ve spent 30 years perfecting the “Tahoe Whitewater experience” blending professional outfitting with a welcoming, family-run atmosphere. We don’t just guide trips; we share the river heritage that we’ve helped build and protect for over three decades.
-
Safety At Tahoe Whitewater Tours, we believe that a thrilling experience is only possible when it is built on a foundation of safety. On the South Fork American River, our “Safety First” approach ensures that every guest—from children (ages 7+) to adventurous seniors—can enjoy the rapids with total peace of mind. Every raft on the South Fork is led by a professional river guide. Our guides undergo rigorous training in river reading, swiftwater rescue, and first aid. Before we ever hit the water, your guide will lead a comprehensive safety orientation and paddle talk, teaching you the “do’s and don’ts” of the river and how to work as a team to navigate the rapids.
-
Top Tier Gear We provide all the high-quality gear you need for a comfortable and secure day on the river. We use only industry-leading equipment that is meticulously maintained and inspected daily.

The Source of the Adventure: Where Our Water Comes From
-
Unlike many rivers that rely solely on unpredictable snowmelt, the South Fork of the American River is one of the most reliable rafting runs in the world. This is thanks to a massive, high-elevation network of lakes and reservoirs known as the Upper American River Project (UARP). The water that splashes through your raft in the Chili Bar and Gorge sections begins its journey high in the Sierra Nevada, nearly 10,000 feet up in the Desolation Wilderness and Crystal Basin. Our Five Primary Water Sources Why This Matters for Your Trip When you raft with Tahoe Whitewater Tours, you are riding the results of one of the most sophisticated water-sharing systems in the West—ensuring that every trip is as exciting as the last!
-
Union Valley Reservoir: The largest in the system, holding the bulk of our summer fun.
-
Loon Lake: Perched high in the alpine granite, providing crisp, clear snowmelt.
-
Ice House Reservoir: A key contributor that feeds into the South Fork via Silver Creek.
-
Slab Creek Reservoir: The final major “holding tank” just miles above our launch point.
-
Chili Bar Reservoir: The immediate source for our trips, where water is released daily to create the rapids we love.
-
-
Season & Availability
-
April, May, June, July, August, September The South Fork of the American River is California’s most reliable whitewater destination. Unlike many other rivers in the Sierra, the South Fork benefits from dam-controlled water releases, which provide consistent, splashy Class III rapids throughout the entire summer.
-
Important Note on “No-Water” Days While the South Fork is highly reliable, water releases are managed by the local utility district. In certain years, “no-water” days may exist mid-week (typically Tuesdays or Wednesdays) where the dam does not release enough water for rafting.

WHAT TO WEAR
-
Getting ready for a whitewater rafting trip is just like preparing for a day at the beach. Since everything on the raft will get wet, dress in clothing that makes you comfortable swimming.
The Quick List:
-
Secure Footwear (REQUIRED): Flip-flops, Crocs, or bare feet are not allowed. You must wear shoes that strap or tie securely to your feet (strap-on sandals, water shoes, booties, or old tennis shoes). This ensures you can safely navigate the shoreline if you hop out for a swim.
-
Swimwear: A bathing suit or quick-drying athletic shorts.
-
Sun Protection: A sun shirt (rash guard) or light synthetic layer, a baseball hat, and sunscreen.
-
Sunglasses: Highly recommended, but please use a retention strap if they are expensive!
-
Water Bottle: A reusable bottle with a hard loop that can be clipped or tied securely to the raft.Getting ready for a whitewater rafting trip is just like preparing for a day at the beach. Since everything on the raft will get wet, dress in clothing that makes you comfortable swimming.
⚠️ Things to Leave at Home: Everything on the river gets wet and can easily fall out of pockets. Please leave cellphones, wallets, car keys, and valuables at home or locked in your vehicle. We provide a secure key-check at our office.

At no extra cost, we provide every guest with professional-grade equipment:

On the Water
-
Minimum Age
-
Minimum Age: 7 Years Old Due to the nature of whitewater rafting, we require all children to be at least seven years old. Whitewater rafting, like any outdoor adventure, involves inherent risks. “Unintentional swimming” (falling out of the raft) can occur on any trip, regardless of the difficulty level. It is vital that all participants are old enough to listen to, understand, and follow the instructions given by our professional river guides and staff in the event of a swim or a technical rapid.
-
Active Participation: Everyone Paddles Rafting the South Fork is a team sport! Every guest is an active member of the paddling crew. You will be expected to follow your guide’s commands—paddling forward, backward, or “digging in”—to help navigate the raft through Class III rapids like Troublemaker and Satan’s Cesspool. This requires a baseline level of physical exertion and the ability to grip a paddle for the duration of the trip.
Physical Requirements
-
Weight Limit: 250 lbs For the safety of our guests and the buoyancy of our rafts, we have a maximum weight limit of 250 lbs. This ensures that our guides can safely assist guests back into the boat if they take an unintentional swim and helps keep the raft nimble and high in the water for technical maneuvers.
-
Swimming Ability Knowing how to swim is not a requirement for our Class II-III tours, as every guest is fitted with a high-float, professional PFD (Life Jacket). However, you should be comfortable in moving water and must not have a phobia of being in the river. Because swimming can occur on any rafting trip no matter the difficulty level, staying calm and following your guide’s instructions is the most important skill you can bring to the river!
-
-
Raft Size and Capacity
We utilize a versatile fleet of 13’, 14’, and 16’ self-bailing river rafts. These professional-grade boats are chosen specifically to match the river’s daily flow and your group’s needs.
-
Paddling Teams: Our rafts typically accommodate between 2 and 8 paddlers plus a guide. Because the South Fork is California’s most popular rafting destination, smaller parties may be paired with other adventurous rafters to create a full, high-energy paddling team for the day.
-
Adaptability: Throughout the season, we adjust our raft sizes based on snowmelt runoff and daily dam-controlled flow rates. This ensures that every boat remains nimble and responsive through technical rapids like “Troublemaker” and “Satan’s Cesspool.”
-
Large Groups: If your group exceeds 6 or 8 people, we will split your party into multiple rafts. This allows for more room to paddle, and a more intimate connection with your guides.
-
Late Season Reliability: Unlike other rivers, the consistent, dam-controlled flows of the South Fork allow us to run larger rafts deep into the summer months (July and August) without sacrificing the quality of the whitewater.
No matter the group size, our goal is to ensure your boat is balanced and ready for the splashy wave trains of the American River! Guest Involvement on a Guided Whitewater Rafting Tour
All of our tours are led by a river guide in the back of the raft, guiding you and your group throughout the day. The guide will show you how to sit in the raft, hold the paddle, and teach you proper paddling techniques. The guide will give paddling commands interacting with paddle strokes while navigating the raft through the river and turbulent sections.
Our goal is to have professional and customer-oriented guides trained to give you a fantastic river experience.
If your guide did a wonderful job and you had a fun experience, tipping is an acceptable form of showing appreciation to your guide at the end of the tour.
As Paddling Guests we ask you to be responsible in listening to all of your guides commands to navigate the section of river smoothly. Teamwork, listening to your guide, paddling strong, and having a fun time are the recipes for a successful trip.

Photos & Professional Photography
Capture the thrill without the risk! We want you to be fully present for the adrenaline of the South Fork American, so we’ve made it easy to get world-class shots of your adventure without risking your own gear.
Keep Your Tech Safe (and Your Hands Free!)
We strongly discourage bringing cell phones or personal cameras on the rafts. Everything that goes on the river has a high chance of being lost, broken, or “gone forever” in the current.
-
Safety First: Your guides need your full attention and active paddling to navigate Class III rapids safely. Holding a phone is a distraction that can compromise the team’s stability.
-
Entrapment Hazards: For your safety, lanyards, neck straps, and bulky phone cases are strictly prohibited on the boats. These can become serious snag or entrapment hazards in moving water.
GoPros & Adventure Cameras
If you want to capture your own “POV” footage, GoPros and similar adventure devices are more than welcome!
-
Mounting: Please be aware that you may need to provide your own adhesive mount, as our helmets do not come with pre-installed attachments.
-
Questions? If you have specific questions about mounting your camera or bringing adventure gear, please give our office a call before your trip.
